Hey friend,
I went down a rabbit hole this week about what it takes for one person to come into this world, and the math is insane.
You have:
- 2 grandparents
- 2 parents
- 4 grandparents
- 8 great-grandparents
- 16 great-great-grandparents
Every generation back, the number doubles. Go back 40 generations, roughly 1,000 years, and the math says you would need over 1 trillion direct ancestors. That’s more people than have ever lived on this earth.
The reason the math works is that family trees overlap. Your ancestors married distant cousins, and they shared bloodlines across villages and regions.
The branches fold back into each other, but even with that overlap, the sheer volume of people who had to meet, survive, reproduce, and raise children long enough for the next generation to do the same is staggering.
One famine, a war, a bad winter, or even a different decision on a random Tuesday 600 years ago, and you may not even be here to read this.
Every single one of those people made it, and that is your lineage.
I think about this when clients tell me that they don’t have good genetics.
You are literally the product of thousands of generations of survivors.
Your body isn’t the problem. What you do with it might be.
Here's what caught my attention this week.
Here Is Your 4 Minute Friday:
1. The #1 Meal For Longevity Is Not What You Think
Most conversations we hear about nutrition focus on what you eat and how much, but a new study suggests that when you eat needs to be in that conversation too.
People who ate their first meal after noon had a 29% higher risk of dying from any cause compared to those who ate between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. At age 50, the late-first-meal group had an estimated life expectancy about two and a half years shorter. Late-night eating showed a similar pattern: those who ate their last meal after midnight had a 27% higher risk of all-cause mortality.
The part that surprised me most was that eating your last meal too early (before 7:00 a.m.) was associated with a 13% higher risk. It's not simply that eating early means living longer. There seems to be a window.
While the study was observational, it does align with what we know about circadian biology, where your body processes food differently at different times of day. Your insulin sensitivity peaks in the morning, and digestion slows at night.
Meal timing is a big part of what we recommend in the Lean Body 90 and to our clients.
I recommend eating your first meal within a few hours of waking and finishing your dinner at least 3 to 5 hours before bed. Not because of this one study, but because it consistently helps with sleep, energy, and appetite regulation.
A lot of people say, "You are what you eat," but we are starting to find out that "when you eat" is important too.
2. The Free 5-Minute Trick That Eliminates Stress
The biggest problem with stress is that most people have no idea how to manage it. Everyone thinks you need to meditate for 20 minutes, but a Stanford study suggests you might need far less.
Researchers split 108 people into four groups. Each group did 5 minutes a day of one of three breathing techniques or mindfulness meditation. They did it for a total of 28 days.
All 3 breathing groups saw lower anxiety, reduced heart rate, and better mood, but one technique outperformed everything, including meditation, and it was cyclic sighing.
It's simple to do: you take 2 inhales through the nose. The first fills the lungs, and the second is a short sniff that tops them off. Then you take one long, slow exhale through the mouth, sighing as if you have just completed a big day.
When you're stressed, breathing becomes fast and shallow. The small air sacs in your lungs start to partially collapse. The double inhale physically reopens them. The long exhale activates the vagus nerve and tells your nervous system that there are no threats anymore.
Your body already does this on its own: you sigh involuntarily every five minutes for exactly this reason. Cyclic sighing makes it intentional. If you're feeling stressed, take about five minutes and try out the cyclic sigh. You might be surprised at how much better you feel.
❤️ My Favourite Thing This Week
Most people pick exercises based on what they see online. This book changed how I think about exercise selection entirely.
We all know movement patterns matter. I talked about it in this newsletter, but one of the most under-taught aspects of training is finding the right exercises for your body.
This isn't about body types like ectomorph or mesomorph. Those categories are false, and they don't tell you anything.
What matters is the leverage created by how long your limbs are in comparison to your torso. For example, someone with long femurs and a short torso is going to squat differently than someone built the opposite way, and they absolutely should.
Strength training for all body types goes deeper into that than anything else I've read. It covers 13 different body structures and shows you how to modify common lifts like the squat, deadlift, and bench press to match your build.
It's the best fitness book nobody has read, and that's a shame. You can check it out on Amazon right here.
Client Of The Week - Jay, Executive
Jay is an executive who wanted to take back control of his health and feel strong again.
He’s now down 37.2 lbs, lost 7.5 inches off his waist, and is noticeably stronger and healthier both physically and mentally.
One of his biggest breakthroughs? He stopped “winging it.” Jay now pre-plans for social events and travel, which has eliminated the guesswork and kept him consistent no matter the environment.
Here's how we did it:
- Focused on structured strength training
- Built a flexible but intentional nutrition plan
- Emphasized planning over willpower
Jay didn’t just lose weight, he built stability, confidence, and control. Outstanding work, Jay!
One Quote To Finish Your Week Strong
"The probability of you existing at all is about 1 in 10 to the power of 2,685,000. It is the rough equivalent of 2 million people getting together to play a dice-rolling game with a trillion-sided die, and they all simultaneously roll the exact same number. You are a miracle that shouldn't exist."
― Dr. Ali Binazir
When you run the math on what it takes for you to even exist in this world, it is mind-boggling.
You might think, "How am I special?"
To which I would answer, "How are you not special?"
As promised, get healthier in under 4 minutes.
